During her internship at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), a 20-year-old student from the city developed a web-searching tool for scientists, which significantly reduced their research time from hours to just five minutes.

Sreshta Kosaraju, a student at KL deemed-to-be university in Hyderabad, was assigned the task of gathering data during her internship at the National Remote Sensing Centre, Department of Space, which is an ISRO center in Hyderabad. She had to sift through 9,000 online research sources and papers and create a web-searching tool to help scientists save time. She developed an open-source website for this purpose.

“During my internship, I had to extract important information from thousands of research sources and papers. It was a very time-consuming task, which is why I started working on selenium and beautifulsoup to develop an open-source website that only displays the essential data and eliminates unnecessary information,” said Sreshta, who is a third-year computer science engineering student.

She explained that scientists can now use the research webpage to find more information. “A research task that previously took 4-5 hours can now be completed in just 5 minutes,” said Sreshta, who completed a five-month virtual internship with ISRO.

Sreshta, who was born in Tenali, Andhra Pradesh, mentioned that her university and lecturers helped her catch up on missed classes during her internship period.

The vice-chancellor of the university, GP Saradhi Varma, expressed their satisfaction with young talent exploring opportunities that allow them to engage with the world of expertise.

“Our university has always supported a two-way learning model for students, combining knowledge from mentors within the college and leaders with experience in the business world. We are proud to see innovation from our students,” he added.
